Spelman College Immersed at Coptis: Understanding Tomorrow’s Cosmetic R&D

Supporting the next generation of scientists and formulators has been part of Coptis’ DNA for many years. Across the globe (United States, France, Singapore…), we build partnerships with prestigious universities to help future talents understand how innovation translates into concrete products.

It is in this spirit that we recently had the pleasure of welcoming American students from Spelman College (Atlanta, US) to our Paris headquarters. On the agenda: an immersive afternoon dedicated to cosmetic R&D, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence. The college offers a renowned Cosmetic Science program; you can explore all their academic tracks on Spelman.edu.

This visit took place as part of the IES-Spelman France Summer Program 2026, a unique immersion program alongside beauty industry leaders (including other benchmark players such as The Estée Lauder Companies). A key step at Coptis to discover how tech is redefining formulation.

Discovering the Reality of Modern Cosmetic R&D

For students in Cosmetic Science, formulation is often synonymous with creativity and product development. However, industrial reality is far more complex.

Creating a cosmetic product today requires simultaneously juggling a multitude of essential parameters:

  • Rigorous selection of raw materials
  • Global regulatory compliance
  • Stability and performance testing, alongside marketing claims
  • Sustainability requirements and scientific data management

During this meeting, the students discovered firsthand how digital tools enable laboratories to master this complexity in order to accelerate innovation.

An Immersion at the Heart of Digital Transformation

The tour was structured to provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges faced by today’s R&D laboratories, thanks to insights from our experts:

  • Introduction to Innovation: Jean-Baptiste Mérieux opened the session by introducing Coptis and the strategic role of digital platforms in the cosmetic industry.

  • Live Demonstration: Nicolas Trotot and Elsa Salle de Chou led a practical session on the Coptis solution, demonstrating how to centralize formulation data, regulatory compliance, and project processes within a single collaborative environment.

  • AI Focus: Anaïs Farion wrapped up the tour with an engaging presentation on the potential of artificial intelligence to support formulators in their daily activities.

Understanding the Importance of Data

One of the most striking takeaways from this meeting was seeing how quickly the students grasped a major challenge in today’s cosmetic industry: although chemistry remains at the heart of formulation, modern R&D also relies heavily on the ability to manage complex data, multiple regulatory requirements, and increasingly interconnected development processes.

Formulas, raw materials, test results, regulatory constraints, and project data must now be linked to enable fast, reliable, and informed decision-making.

This reality becomes even more essential with the rise of artificial intelligence in cosmetic laboratories. AI offers significant opportunities to accelerate innovation, but its effectiveness depends above all on the quality, structure, and accessibility of the data it relies on.

As we like to say at Coptis: “Artificial intelligence is only as powerful as the data that feeds it.

Strengthening Links Between Education and Industry

Beyond the technological aspects, this visit highlighted the crucial importance of bridging the gap between the academic world and field realities. By exposing students to the challenges and opportunities faced by cosmetic laboratories, this type of initiative helps narrow the gap between academic training and professional practice.

The students’ curiosity, the relevance of their questions, and their enthusiasm for industry developments led to incredibly enriching exchanges

Looking to the Future

From Atlanta to Singapore, from Nantes to Montpellier, the same curiosity drives tomorrow’s cosmetic professionals. They all seek to understand how ideas become products, how science turns into innovation, and how technology is reshaping tomorrow’s careers.

At Coptis, we are convinced that these exchanges are vital. They bring academia closer to industry realities and allow us, at our level, to contribute to training the next generation of formulators and innovators.
